Prosthetic Components — Feet, Knees, Pylons, Adapters & Suspension
A prosthetic leg is an assembly. Below the socket sit the parts that carry your weight, set your height, absorb impact and connect everything together. This page explains what those prosthetic components are and what actually drives the choice between them, so the options make sense when they are discussed at your assessment.
Two principles worth holding on to. First, components are selected against how you will use the limb, not against a price list — the most advanced part is not automatically the right one. Second, the socket fit matters more than anything below it; upgrading a foot will not rescue a socket that does not fit.
The Main Components
Prosthetic Foot
From SACH feet through single-axis and multi-axial designs to carbon fibre dynamic-response feet that store and return energy. Choice follows activity level, terrain, body weight and whether you need the foot to cope with uneven ground. Detail on the prosthetic foot page.
Prosthetic Knee
For above-knee limbs: single-axis, polycentric, manual-locking, pneumatic, hydraulic and microprocessor-controlled units. The trade-off is between stability and ease of swing. See prosthetic knee.
Pylon
The tube connecting socket to foot, setting limb length and transferring load. Usually aluminium, titanium or carbon composite. Some incorporate shock absorption or rotation to reduce loading on the residual limb during turning.
Adapters & Couplings
Tube clamps, pyramid adapters, rotation adapters and torque absorbers. They join components and provide the adjustment range used during alignment. Unglamorous, but they are where alignment changes actually happen — and where looseness shows up first.
Suspension
What holds the limb on: pin/shuttle lock, suction with a valve, elevated vacuum, seal-in liner, suspension sleeve, or belt and strap systems. Chosen with the socket and the liner, since the three work as one system.
Interface & Consumables
Liners, sleeves, sheaths and stump socks. These wear out on a routine basis and are the parts most often replaced over the life of a limb.
Upper Limb Components
Body-powered hooks and hands with harness and cable, cosmetic hands and gloves, and myoelectric systems. Covered on the artificial hand and upper limb page.
Cosmetic Finishing

What Decides the Choice
- Activity level. The main driver. Walking indoors at a steady pace, working outdoors on uneven ground and running are genuinely different mechanical problems.
- Amputation level and limb condition. Length, shape, skin and any scarring govern what the socket can do, and the socket governs what the rest can do.
- Body weight. Components carry manufacturer weight ratings that must be respected.
- Terrain and daily environment. Rural ground, stairs, fields, wet conditions and dust all affect what will survive and what will keep working.
- Maintenance realities. If you live far from a fitting centre, a component that is simple to service may serve you better than a sophisticated one that cannot be attended to locally.
- Budget and scheme eligibility. Including whether ADIP/ALIMCO or a service scheme applies to you.

Component cost varies enormously — a basic foot and a microprocessor knee are different orders of magnitude — and the total for a limb depends on the socket, the components, the liner and the fitting work together. We would rather quote your case properly than publish a number that turns out not to apply to you. It is chosen together with the socket and liner because the three work as one system.
Often yes. Feet, knees, pylons, adapters, liners and locks can usually be replaced on an existing limb, though alignment should be rechecked afterwards because a component change alters how the limb behaves. If the socket no longer fits, replacing parts below it will not solve the problem.
