Types of KAFO (Knee Ankle Foot Orthosis)
Traditional Metal-Leather KAFO
Classic double upright metal KAFO with leather thigh cuff and calf band. Durable, adjustable, and repairable. Widely prescribed under ALIMCO and government schemes across India. Suitable for all age groups.
Plastic (Polypropylene) KAFO
Lightweight thermoplastic KAFO molded to the patient's limb. Better cosmetic appearance and comfort than metal KAFO. Suitable for patients with partial lower limb weakness and good sitting balance.
Carbon Fiber KAFO
Ultra-lightweight carbon fiber KAFO for active patients. Significantly lighter than plastic or metal, providing maximum mobility with minimum energy expenditure. Ideal for younger, active patients with lower limb paralysis.
KAFO with Mechanical Knee Lock
KAFO with a drop-lock or bail-lock knee mechanism. Locks in extension for standing and walking, unlocks for sitting. Essential for patients with complete quadriceps weakness or instability who need full stance stability.

An AFO controls only the ankle and foot (below the knee). A KAFO controls the knee, ankle, and foot (full lower limb from thigh to foot). KAFO is prescribed when BOTH the knee and ankle need support, while AFO is sufficient when only the ankle/foot needs control.
