Prosthetics & Artificial Limbs in Mumbai

People often arrive expecting to be measured and handed a limb. It does not work that way, and knowing the real sequence makes the whole thing less daunting.

1. We talk first. What you need to be able to do, what you did before, where you live and what the floor and stairs are like. A limb for someone who works standing all day is specified differently from one for mostly indoor use.
2. Examination. The residual limb — shape, length, skin condition, scar position, sensation, range of movement and muscle strength. Each of these affects socket design.
3. Casting or scanning. The socket is made to your limb, so we take a cast or scan of it.
4. Test socket. A trial socket is fitted and adjusted before the definitive limb is made. Problems found here are easy to fix; problems found afterwards are not.
5. Fitting and alignment. The limb is assembled, aligned and adjusted while you stand and walk in it.

How long this takes depends on healing and on how quickly limb volume settles, so we give you a realistic timeline at the first appointment rather than a number over the phone.

• Any prescription, referral letter, discharge summary or operation notes
• Your current prosthesis if you have one, even if it is uncomfortable or unused — especially then
• The shoes you wear most often
• Shorts or loose trousers, so the limb can be examined without difficulty
• A list of what you are finding hard. This is more useful than it sounds and is easily forgotten in the room
• Someone with you if you would like — there is a lot to take in at a first visit
