A silicone hand prosthesis restores the shape and appearance of a hand or part of a hand that has been lost. It is made from an impression of what remains, sculpted by hand, and coloured against the wearer’s own skin — where hair is needed it is implanted strand by strand to follow the direction it grows on the other arm.
Most of what we make here is partial: a few fingers, the body of the hand, a hand with the thumb preserved. Partial hand losses are far commoner than complete ones, and they are the ones people most often assume are not worth doing anything about.
These are passive restorations. They restore shape, and they give a stable surface to pinch and steady objects against, but they do not open and close by themselves. If you need an active grip, see artificial hands and upper-limb prosthetics, which covers myoelectric and body-powered options.

Five pieces, all made at our own centres. Each is taken from an impression and matched to the wearer’s sound hand.

This is a hand and forearm restoration for a below-elbow (transradial) level. The photograph is one of our own: the hair has been implanted strand by strand across the forearm and the back of the hand, following the direction the hair grows on the wearer’s other arm.
Hair matching matters more than people expect. A silicone arm with the right colour but no hair still reads as artificial at conversational distance, particularly on men. It is slow work and it is done case by case, which is why no two of these are alike.
| Material | Medical-grade silicone |
|---|---|
| Made to | One person only — taken from an impression and matched to the sound side |
| Colour matching | Done in person at the centre, against the wearer’s own skin |
| Retention | Depends on the case — confirm with the centre |
| What it does | Restores the shape, length and appearance of the hand and forearm. It is a passive restoration — it does not grip actively, though it gives a stable surface to hold things against and to steady objects with. |
| Care | Mild soap and water, dried before wearing. Keep away from ballpoint ink, newsprint and strong dyes, which stain silicone permanently. |

This photograph is the check we do at the colour stage: the prosthesis is laid against the wearer’s own hand, in daylight, and the two are compared directly. If the match is not right, the colour work goes back on the bench.
Skin is not one colour. The back of a hand is darker than the palm, the knuckles are darker again, and the fingertips carry more red. A flat single-tone silicone hand is the giveaway that something is artificial, so the colour is built up in layers rather than mixed to one shade.

Where the thumb has survived an injury, it is almost always worth keeping it working. This restoration is shaped around the thumb rather than over it: the wearer’s own thumb stays exposed and keeps its sensation, and the silicone replaces the fingers and the body of the hand.
That matters because sensation cannot be replaced. A thumb you can feel with, opposing a silicone surface you cannot, is a more useful hand than a complete cosmetic one.

A two-finger restoration, shown here off the hand. The knuckle creases, the nail beds and the slight differences in length between the digits are all formed into the silicone rather than printed on.
Partial hand losses are the most common upper-limb losses we see, and they are the ones people most often assume nothing can be done about. In practice they are among the most satisfying to restore, because so little has to be rebuilt for the hand to read as whole again.

Three views of one device, before colouring. The cuff is the part that holds it on: it is extended up the hand far enough to stay put during use, and thinned at the edge so the join does not show as a ridge under the skin tone.
The edge is the hardest part of this work. A thick edge is visible and catches; too thin and it tears. Getting that transition right is most of what separates a restoration that is worn daily from one that stays in a drawer.

A silicone prosthesis is matched to one person’s own skin, so the colour work has to be done with that person in the room. Limbgenixx has four centres in India, and silicone hands can be started at any of them.

A hand-shaped restoration made from medical-grade silicone, taken from an impression of the wearer’s remaining hand and arm and coloured to match their own skin. It is worn on the outside and removed like a garment. It restores shape and appearance rather than active movement.
Not actively. It is a passive restoration — it does not open or close by itself. What it does give you is a stable, shaped surface: you can hold a phone or a plate against it, trap paper under it, pinch light objects between it and your other hand. For active grip you need a myoelectric or body-powered prosthesis instead.
Then it should almost always be kept working. We shape the restoration around a preserved thumb rather than over it, so your own thumb stays exposed and keeps its sensation. Sensation cannot be replaced by any prosthesis, so a thumb you can feel with is worth more than a complete cosmetic hand.
Where hair is wanted it is implanted strand by strand and matched for colour, density and the direction it grows on the sound arm. On men this is usually what decides whether an arm restoration passes at a glance, so it is worth the time it takes.
Yes. Rings, bangles and watches are worn over silicone restorations routinely — one of the photographs on this page shows exactly that. Bring the ones you wear to the fitting so the sizing accounts for them.
It depends on what is being made — a two-finger partial hand and a full hand and forearm with implanted hair are very different pieces of work. We quote after an assessment rather than from a price list. Message us on WhatsApp with photographs and we will tell you what is involved.
At any of our four centres: Gwalior and Indore in Madhya Pradesh, Navi Mumbai in Maharashtra, and Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh. The colour has to be matched against your own skin in person, so at least one visit is necessary wherever you live.
